Petrov has a circumpolar career path: he was born, raised and educated in Russia, received his PhD in Canada (Toronto) and works as Assistant Professor of Geography and Director of the Arctic Social and Environmental Systems Research Lab (ARCSES) at the University of Northern Iowa, USA.
